On a steep mountain slope near Krakow, Poland, architect Robert Konieczny created his house that looks more like a displaced ship than a ground-based dwelling. Enter Konieczny’s Ark.

The views surrounding this house are so impressive that full wall windows were installed for maximum enjoyment. Still, home security has not been compromised as the entry side windows can be fully covered by a sliding wall and the entrance bridge can be raised to cover the door. Being on a slope, only one corner is at ground level and, as the rest of the dwelling reaches out over space, the foundation shell is slanted inward, thus giving the Ark a very boat-like appearance.

Because the Ark is in a wilderness environment, groundwater runoff is channeled under the dwelling and the high peaked roof prevents heavy snow buildup. The poured concrete structure is fully insulated on the inside and helps create a vapor barrier. For all its simplicity of appearance, this houseboat on a hill presents a fine living experience that offers full indoor comfort with wide open spaces appeal. Details in the video
